God save the King
George V
King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and of his other realms, since 31 October 2028
He became King at fifteen, when the Realm, last of his realms, gave effect to the abdication of his father, Ernest V. The demise fell at two in the afternoon in New Westminster, six in the evening in London, and he was in a geometry class at Ellicott High School. His mother, Queen Christina of Sweden, acts for him as Regent in thirteen of his realms until his sixteenth birthday. He was born Frederick Alexander, and he is the first sovereign ordinarily resident in the Realm.

The accession
Until the loss of his father's aircraft on 25 September 2028 (Kittyhawk) he held no office and exercised no function. In the weeks that followed he wrote his own statements, met his father's aircraft on the airfield on the night of the rescue, sat at the table of the Privy Council as an observer without a voice, and went back to school. On 25 October he told the Realm, alone at Columbia Palace, that his father had asked what an abdication would require. On 30 October the King decided to give up the Crown, and the thirteen governments of the Interrealm Succession Compact adopted common terms the same day: the son would reign as George V from the day the last realm gave effect to the abdication, the age at which a sovereign reigns in his own right would be sixteen in every realm, and his mother would be his Regent until then.
The other realms acted in the course of 31 October. In the Realm, His Majesty's Declaration of Abdication Bill passed its remaining stages in both Houses before midday without a division. The Governor-General cannot assent to a bill that touches the succession, and his mother gave the Royal Assent as Regent at Columbia Palace at 11:42 in the morning. At two his geometry teacher read the principal's email, asked to speak to him in the hall and told him there, and he went back into the class, which went on. He stayed to the end of the school day. At four he went to New Westminster General, where his father had been since 29 September, and read him the next day's arrivals at Union Station. At six the Privy Council proclaimed his accession at Columbia Palace, and he attended it and did not speak. That evening his father was created Duke of Cumberland, and the Household announced that the King would be crowned in Westminster Abbey after his sixteenth birthday, on a date to be fixed.
Fourteen capacities
He holds the fourteen capacities of the personal union, eleven kingdoms, two duchies and an empire, each separately and under its own law: Great Britain, the United Kingdom of America, Hanover, Ireland, New Wessex, New Albion, South Africa, the River Plate, the West Indies Federation, the Philippines and Malaya; the duchies of Normandy and Brunswick; and the Empire of Raj. He reigns in each separately, under its own style and its own law, as King, Duke or Emperor, and no realm's ministers may advise him on another's affairs.
He reigns as George V in all of them, a name not used in the union's numbering since George IV died in 1830, and Hanover, which once had a Georg V of its own, follows the union's numbering this time. Until 2 May 2029 he reigns and does not act: in thirteen realms the Regent exercises the royal functions in his name, and in Malaya, which follows the British Crown by its own constitution, he performs no act. His oaths wait for his birthday.
Early life
Frederick Alexander was born on 2 May 2013 at the Karolinska hospital in Stockholm, the only child of Ernest V and Queen Christina of Sweden, a queen regnant in her own right, when his father was sixty-six. He was heir apparent from birth, as Prince of Wales, Prince of Columbia and four other heir's dignities, all of which merged in the Crown at his accession. Through his mother he is Crown Prince of Sweden, an inheritance that lies wholly outside the union.
He lived in Stockholm until he was three and spoke Swedish before English. In the autumn of 2016 he moved to Columbia Palace, and in 2018 his mother moved with him on one condition: "I will not be a visitor in my son's life." His father reigned from London, and his guide to the American Crown was the resident Governor-General rather than the King.
School and character
He has been at Ellicott High School since September 2025, enrolled as Frederick Hanover, and the Household has said that he will finish there with his year. He is best at history and mathematics and worst at art, has rowed in the school's second eight on the Potomac, and knows the Realm's railways by timetable. An alphabetical seating plan put him beside Theo Hartigan, the son of a bus driver and a nurse from the Grand Duchy of Wisconsin, and the friendship is the closest of his life.
He is described as curious, direct and dry, and unable to let a half-answer go. He asks "and then what?" so often that two tutors have kept a tally. The household's phrase for him is "the boy beneath the Crown", coined in 2019, which he has said he likes, because it is true.
The succession
He is an only child, and the direct line across fourteen Crown capacities rests on a single life. His heir presumptive is his aunt, Queen Caroline of Hanover, his father's only sibling; after her come her son, Alexander I, German Emperor and King of Prussia, who is eight months younger than the King, and then her daughter, Princess Charlotte. No instrument of any realm says what would follow if the line reached a sovereign who already reigns elsewhere.
