Polities & the Federation
The United Kingdom of America comprises 49 constituent polities, the Columbia District, and the Territory of Loreto, spanning ten polity types established through the Charter of Union of the American Colonies (1783) and subsequent parliamentary action.
- Province
- State
- Commonwealth
- Grand Duchy
- Republic
- March
- Kingdom
- District
- Territory
Borders are drawn from county lines, so the older ones are approximate. Land is shown under the jurisdiction that held it that year: a territory covers the counties it covered, whatever polity they belong to now.
The atlas could not be loaded. The map of the polities as they stand is shown instead.
The ten polity types
| Type | Example | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Province | Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts Bay | The original colonial model; Westminster-style government |
| State | Oklahoma-Sequoyah, the Dakotas, Colorado | Standard federal form, some carry distinctive names (Free State, etc.) |
| Commonwealth | California, Cascadia, Illinois, West Virginia | Broad autonomy; a thing held in common rather than erected by the Crown |
| Grand Duchy | Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Louisiane | Hereditary head of state acting in the name of the duchy’s own Crown, with no separate representative of the American Crown; three houses invited from foreign thrones, one a cadet line of the House of Hanover |
| Kingdom | Hawaiʻi, Alaska | Indigenous or hereditary monarchical structure |
| March | Arizona | Crown frontier polity; Lord Marcher for constitutional emergency |
| Republic | Texas, Florida, Vermont | Republican form within the Union |
| Free City | Philipsburg | Chartered municipal autonomy, self-governing city under a Crown charter |
| District | Columbia District | Federal capital territory |
| Territory | Loreto | Federal territory under transitional Crown administration; ultimate status unsettled |
The treaty nations are not polities and are not a polity type. The 574 nations on the Schedule hold their land under treaty with the Crown in right of America, or in Alaska under the accession settlement of 1884, and stand outside the 49 in law, from the Navajo Republic, the largest by territory and the only one that is a republic, to nations of a few hundred people. See Treaty Nations of the United Kingdom of America.
Who leads them
Most polities are headed by an office rather than a named person. These are the holders the Register has established.
| Polity | Head of state | Head of government |
|---|---|---|
| Minnesota | Grand Duke Olav, since 2003 | Minister-President |
| Wisconsin | Grand Duke Wolfgang, since 2028 | Premier |
| Michigan | Grand Duke Justin, since 1981; the Grand Duchess Diane has been Regent since 2027 | First Minister |
| Louisiane | Ferdinand III, since 2026 | First Minister Élodie Boudreaux |
| Alaska | Hans-Adam II, since 1989; Hereditary Prince Alois has been Regent since 2004 | Premier |
| Hawaiʻi | Kamehameha VII, since 2014 | Kuhina Nui Leialaʻohe Kapule KC |
| The March of Arizona | Lord Marcher Gabrielle Giffords, since 2027 | High Steward |
| Plymouth | Captain-Regent Antone Barros | High Warden |
| West Virginia | Lord Lieutenant of the Commonwealth | First Minister |
Three of the four grand duchies invited a house from a foreign throne; the fourth, Michigan, was given a cadet line of the House of Hanover, descended from George III through the Duke of Cambridge. Two polities are presently under a regency, Michigan for the incapacity of a reigning Grand Duke and Alaska for a delegation made in 2004, and they are the only two polities under one.

Every polity of the Realm, grouped as the Charter’s types group them. The list is generated from the articles themselves, so it cannot fall behind them.
