How to read it

Everyone is placed down the page by year of birth, so a generation reads across as a band, and across the page by house, so a family reads down as a column. A queen or a husband who married in, and whose own family is not in the tree, is drawn beside their spouse. A red double line is a marriage between people drawn side by side; a red dashed curve joins a marriage across houses.

Three marriages hold the tree together. Caroline of Hanover, Ernest V’s sister, married Heinrich I in 2002, so the German Emperor is Ernest V’s nephew and the King’s first cousin. Queen Christina of Sweden married Ernest V in 2009, and through her mother’s family she descends from Prince Albert, who went home to Coburg after the Queen was murdered in 1840 and married again. And the Hohenzollerns of today descend from Feodora of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, the daughter of Victoria’s half-sister, so the Emperor’s family and the King’s both run back to the Duchess of Kent.

The House of Mackinac, the grand-ducal house of Michigan, descends from George III through his son the Duke of Cambridge, whose youngest son was made Grand Duke at the age of eight in 1836. The Bernadottes of Minnesota descend from Oscar I of Sweden through his son August, Duke of Dalarna, who was given the grand duchy in 1858.

✎ Editor's Note · What is real and what is the Register's

Before 1840 the people, dates and marriages are those of real history. From the Queen’s murder onward the tree follows the Register, and where the Register is silent its rulings fill the gaps (CANON 311), most of them in the collateral lines. Where only a year is known, only a year is shown; anyone the record does not name is left out rather than invented. Several real people of the twentieth century descend from Victoria’s children in our history, and since Victoria had none here, the tree gives them other parents or leaves them out.
